St. George Orthodox Church in Kalayapuram has a rich history dating back to the 1860s when it was established by the esteemed Maliekal Family. This illustrious family known for their deep-rooted faith and commitment to their community played a pivotal role in the founding of the church. The Maliekal Family's dedication to their faith was already evident in their earlier contributions to religious establishments such as the Maramon Marthoma Church. Upon migrating to Kalayapuram the branch of the Maliekal Family recognized the need for a local place of worship. They dedicated themselves to establishing religious sanctuaries in their new home. In a testament to their enduring legacy they constructed St.George Orthodox Church on the land of Munduveli Kunchandi the second son of the Maliekal Family who migrated to Kalayapuram. This sacred site became affectionately known as "Munduveli Pally"symbolizing the familial ties and spiritual significance imbued within its walls. Though it is one of the smallest churches in Kalayapuram it is now known as Kalayapuram Cheriya Pally.

Before the establishment of St.George Orthodox Church the native Christians of Kalayapuram worshipped at Kottarakkara Church. However, the members of the Maliekal Family felt a strong need to establish a church within Kalayapuram to serve the local Christian community better. Thus, St.George Orthodox Church became the first church in Kalayapuram standing as a beacon of faith and community. Kalayapuram Cheriyapally embodies the enduring values of its founders through generations it has served as a place of worship, fellowship, and cultural heritage for the residents of Kalayapuram and beyond. The current church building of Kalayapuram Cheriyapally holds historical significance having been consecrated by the Catholicos, His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews II, on 26 July 1997. Notably, the foundation stone for this sacred edifice was laid by him on 28 May 1985, during his tenure as the Metropolitan of the Kollam Diocese.
